The Birth of Katawa Shoujo: A Game Born from Passion and Perseverance

For over a decade, the idea of creating a game about disabilities set in a Japanese high school had been simmering in the minds of developers. It wasn't until January 2007, when an anonymous sticky was posted on 4chan's anime board, that the project gained traction. The spark ignited by this chance event led to the formation of Four Leaf Studios, a core development team dedicated to bringing this vision to life.

The journey began in December 2000 with the release of Schuppen Harnische, a doujin created by artist RAITA from circle Zettai Shoujo. This early work contained a sketch that would later serve as inspiration for Katawa Shoujo's concept. The game's story spans over ten years, weaving together the perspectives of its five main female characters through a first-person narrative.

At its core, Katawa Shoujo is a visual novel set in Yamaku High School, a fictional institution for disabled children located in modern Japan. The protagonist, Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, finds his world turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization.

Over the years, a multinational team of twenty-one developers worked tirelessly on various aspects of the game, from art and music to writing, programming, and direction. The project saw countless contributions from passionate individuals, both past and present, who shared their talents to bring this unique story to life.

After months of brainstorming with little progress, Four Leaf Studios is proud to announce the full release of Katawa Shoujo on January 4th, 2012, available free of charge. This momentous occasion marks the culmination of perseverance, dedication, and creativity from a group of talented individuals who refused to let their vision fade away.
